Telstra offers two main APNs:

  • telstra.internet: This is the primary APN used for regular internet access on your phone or tablet.
  • telstra.wap: This is an older APN used for Telstra’s WAP portal, which is less common nowadays.

There are also other, less frequently used APNs for specific purposes, such as Telstra MMS.

Checking Your Current APN Settings

The process for checking your current APN settings varies depending on your device’s operating system (Android, iOS, etc.) and specific model.

Important: Always refer to your device’s user manual for detailed instructions on accessing and managing APN settings.

Troubleshooting Tips

In my experience, if simply changing the APN to telstra.internet doesn’t fix your mobile data issues, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try that have worked for me:

1. Restart your device – I find a device restart can clear up temporary network glitches.

2. Check network coverage – I look at the signal bars on my phone and refer to Telstra’s coverage map (https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage) to check for known outages.

3. Verify the SIM card – I turn my device off, gently clean the SIM, check it’s inserted properly, then restart.

4. Check for software updates – Outdated device software sometimes causes connectivity problems in my experience, so I check for any available updates.

5. You can try Resetting your network settings (Warning: will erase saved WiFi & Bluetooth connections)

On Android, I go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. On an iPhone, I go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings.

6. Contact Telstra support – If I still have issues after trying these troubleshooting tips, I recommend contacting Telstra directly – they can diagnose based on your specific situation.

Additional things I try:

  • Ensure my dual SIM device has the right SIM set for data
  • Remove any VPN or custom DNS settings
  • Try in different locations to see if it’s a localized network issue

I hope these troubleshooting steps help resolve your Telstra mobile data problems.
